Literally, the above line means a lot. You never feel incomplete in your life if you have a true friend in your life. In fact, the human beings are the social creatures, we can never imagine our life with not having a single friend. A true friend is that who cannot see a pain in your eyes, cannot leave you in a trouble. No matter how frequently we meet up with each other, there is a special day for us to celebrate our friendship.

When we look back on the history of friendship day, we get many pieces of information regarding the originality of it. However, there is no written story about why do we celebrate friendship day on a specific date.

The idea of celebrating friendship was originally given by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark cards in 1930. He proposed to celebrate the day on 2nd August by sending greeting cards and other items as the friendship day celebrations. But the date 2nd August did not last long on Friendship Day history. Later, US Congress decided to celebrate the friendship day on the first Sunday of August as the National Friendship Day. Since then, the celebration of National Friendship Day became an annual event to honor the friendship. And the first World International Friendship Day was proposed on July 30 in 1958 in Paraguay.

Different countries celebrate the friendship day on different dates. Only India and USA observe the special day for friends on the first Sunday of August every year. Nane Annan, the wife of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, named Winnie the Pooh as the world’s Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations in honor of Friendship Day in 1998. U.N. Department of Public Information and Disney Enterprises co-sponsored the event. The program was co-hosted by Kathy Lee Gifford.

The friendship day becomes quite popular among friends day by day. On this day, friends mostly youngsters dedicate the day in the name of the friend. They spend time with each other in a different way like go for a picnic, party, outing, movie in the theatre, and more. Moreover, friends exchange friendship band with each other as a symbol of friendship.
